Europe is making a major move toward technological sovereignty.
Today, the European Commission unveiled the European Technological Sovereignty Package — a comprehensive strategy designed to strengthen Europe’s digital autonomy, resilience, and competitiveness across critical technologies.
Key pillars include:
🔹 Chips Act 2.0
Boosting Europe’s semiconductor capabilities to support AI, cloud infrastructure, and next-generation digital industries.
🔹 Cloud & AI Development Act
Aiming to triple Europe’s data centre capacity while building secure, sustainable, and sovereign AI and cloud infrastructure.
🔹 Open Source Strategy
Scaling European open-source solutions in AI, cybersecurity, cloud, semiconductors, and internet technologies — while supporting developers, startups, and public sector adoption.
🔹 Digitalisation & AI in Energy Roadmap
Using AI and digital technologies to modernise Europe’s energy system, improve grid efficiency, support smart meters, and ensure sustainable integration of growing digital infrastructure.
As Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated:
> “We cannot afford to depend on others for the technologies that keep our hospitals running, our energy grids stable and our services secure.”
This package signals a significant shift in Europe’s approach to digital infrastructure and innovation — with a stronger focus on resilience, sovereignty, sustainability, and strategic independence.
Europe is positioning itself not only as an AI adopter, but as an AI builder.
