Strategic Autonomy & European Security Yesterday, President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a powerful and forward-looking speech at the Munich Security Conference, emphasizing the urgent need for Europe to strengthen its own security, resilience and independence in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.
🛡️ Strategic Autonomy for Europe – Europe must become more self-reliant across defence, energy, trade, raw materials and digital technologies, not in opposition to its partners, but to reinforce cooperation grounded in shared values.
🤝 Mutual Defence Clause – Action, not Theory – The President called for bringing the EU’s mutual defence clause (Article 42(7)) “to life”, making it a tangible and reliable commitment to collective security.
⚔️ Learning from Ukraine – Ukraine’s example shows that strength, deterrence and survival depend on industrial capacity, innovation and rapid capability development — lessons Europe must integrate into its security strategy. 🔧 Breaking Down Barriers – Europe should reduce the divide between civilian industries and defence production, accelerating dual-use technologies like AI, cyber-security, drones and space systems.
🌍 Stronger Partnerships – Deepening security cooperation with partners such as the UK, Norway, Iceland and Canada, while continuing meaningful transatlantic engagement, will be key to collective resilience.
👉 In a world where geopolitical shocks are the new normal, this speech is a clear call to action — to unify, modernize and reinforce Europe’s strategic foundations.
