Debate on the future of EU AI regulation
Date:
September 29, 2025
The European Union is considering a temporary pause in parts of the 2024 Artificial Intelligence Act. Heavy industry lobbying and fears of falling behind the U.S. and China have pushed the European Commission to leave the door open to such a move.
One proposal would delay by up to a year the enforcement of rules for so-called high-risk AI systems (used in education, HR or the judiciary). Supporters argue that companies still lack the necessary technical standards to comply. Critics warn that further delays risk undermining the EU’s credibility as a global leader in ethical and safe AI.
The debate will continue in the Council and the European Parliament in October, with a final decision expected later this autumn.
