Wildfires and Heatwave Ravage Southern Europe

Date:
August 18, 2025

Firefighters in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, and the Balkans are battling widespread wildfires as temperatures soar above 40°C.
At least four people have died in Spain, Albania, and Montenegro, with thousands evacuated from homes and tourist areas. In Spain, nearly 1,000 military personnel are assisting, while in Portugal, a blaze in Vila Real has been burning for 10 days.
Fires in Albania and Montenegro have destroyed forests and farmland; in Greece, evacuations took place on islands and mainland regions; and in Turkey, a major blaze in Canakkale forced hundreds to flee. Hotter, drier summers are expected to make such disasters increasingly frequent.
