Danish Presidency: bold climate goal and digital safety for children

Date:
July 8, 2025
The Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU faces an intense climate deadline — it has less than three months to broker an agreement on the bloc’s 2040 emissions target. The proposed goal: a 90% reduction compared to 1990 levels. This will shape the EU’s climate path for the next 15 years and determine its global credibility at COP30 in Brazil.
At the same time, Denmark wants to use its presidency to push for stricter online safety rules for children. Its top priority is to introduce mandatory age verification on social media platforms across the EU, in order to better protect minors. The initiative has already gained support from France, Italy, Spain, and Greece.
