France recognizes Palestinian statehood

President Emmanuel Macron announced at the UN General Assembly in New York that France officially recognizes the State of Palestine. In a landmark speech, he called for an end to the war in Gaza, the release of Israeli hostages, and a revival of the two-state solution.
The Palestine conference was co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia. Macron stressed that France’s move was not meant as a blow to Israel but as a pathway to peace. At the same time, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia also recognized Palestine, with several EU countries expected to follow.
Israel and the United States criticized the initiative, calling it a “reward for Hamas” and warning it undermines Israel’s position. Still, the French move is seen as a major diplomatic success for Macron, even as it heightens tensions with Washington and Jerusalem.
