Italy Approves Construction of the World’s Longest Suspension Bridge

The Italian government has given final approval for the construction of a bridge linking Sicily to the mainland across the Strait of Messina. The 3.7 km structure will surpass Turkey’s Çanakkale Bridge and is expected to be completed by 2032.
Discussed since the late 1960s, the project faces criticism over earthquake risks, environmental concerns, and fears of mafia infiltration. Supporters say it will drastically improve transport links and boost southern Italy’s economy.
The investment, worth €13.5 billion, is set to be classified as defence spending. The Eurolink consortium, led by Italian company Webuild, will build the bridge. Over 100,000 jobs are expected to be created.
