Brussels plans total ban on Russian gas imports by 2027

The European Commission will propose in June legal measures to phase out EU imports of Russian gas and LNG by the end of 2027. The plan also includes a ban on new contracts and spot deals with Russia from end-2025.
Currently, around 19% of the EU’s gas still comes from Russia, mainly via the TurkStream pipeline and LNG shipments — down from 45% before the Ukraine war. "Since 2022, we’ve spent more on Russian fossil fuels than on aid to Ukraine. That must end," said EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen.
Moscow criticized Brussels’ plan. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the EU is hurting itself by replacing cheaper Russian gas with more expensive U.S. supplies. Brussels, however, is ready to boost U.S. LNG imports, especially with new projects in the U.S. and Qatar set to start in 2026.
The ban needs approval from the European Parliament and a majority of EU countries, which could be tricky as Hungary and Slovakia oppose a gas embargo. The Commission hasn’t yet clarified how it will legally force companies to break long-term contracts with Gazprom.
Brussels also plans measures to curb imports of Russian enriched uranium. According to the Commission, new LNG supplies and the expansion of renewables should limit the impact on energy prices as the EU cuts its dependence on Russian gas.
